Slides and thoughts from Drupal hackfest at FOSSKriti @ IIT Kanpur

Drupal talk session and the hackfest at FOSSKriti, under TechKriti '09 at IIT Kanpur was an experience incalculable. TechKriti is India's largest student gathering to discuss, demonstrate and even compete on a wide range of technical subjects. Open source software development to robot wars to mathematical discussions to train derailment demonstration what? Surprized

The talk

Me and my buddy, Pratul/lut4rp, were the Drupal guys, responsible to introduce people to Drupal and "supposed" to be well prepared in time. But well, we are one among those who study in the last days. Tongue I completed a slide, barely a few hours before we had to give the talk, with points to introduce people to Drupal and later Pratul, excellently, explain them as they were projected on the screen. He hadn't seen half of the slides before, and it was surprising how his imagination was performing! After the introduction and enough convincing, we built an example module right there from scratch, teaching the hooks concept, the forms api and the general stuff a module should do. People were so seriously interested that some of them even noted the whole code to give a try in the later hacking session. If we had recorded this session, it would have easily been the "Introduce yourself and start developing with Drupal in 30 minutes" video! I wish..!

Hackfest. er.. workshop?

After further explaining about the tools and documentation they can make use of, to build something, all of left for the computer lab. We intended it to be a "usability/code sprint" but as was expected, it turned into a workshop on introduce yourself to Drupal. And that too to the bleeding edge release. Smile) Despite the unexpected changes, we took the opportuniy and collected lots of points where Drupal newbies(either newbies to whole stuff, or with past experience with other systems), were stuck. Some of them managed to create a new modules(barely for trying out how this works), for Drupal 7, while others managed to crash their installations by changing the theme to Chameleon (which was broken in HEAD checkout that day).

Who's who?

These, except the two of us, were the guys responsible for the whole of FOSSKriti under the TeckKriti banner! And after we joined them on the campus, this "two of us exception" hasn't been felt yet. Unimaginable hospitality, taunting each other, extreme late night walks and BZ flag during talks, and stuff that can't either be exposed here or be explained in words... An experience I'll never forget!

So, the slides?

While more can be added into this, but it's pretty nifty for the job. Pretty sure they'll serve several "Introduction to Drupal" talks! Elaborate the points Smile
